Course Objective

The course objective is to equip students with beginner level skills for simultaneous interpreting, to familiarize them with work in the booth and to bring them up to a level of interpreting simple speeches simultaneously from German to Turkish.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students are expected to acquire knowledge regarding interpreting.
2   Students are expected to do preliminary preparation and research necessary before the interpreting practice for conferences on various topics.
3   Students are expected to tackle difficulties that may arise during simultaneous interpreting with skills and knowledge they have acquired.
4   Students are expected to act in a professional manner in the booth.
5   Students are expected to acquire general knowledge about issues frequently encountered in interpreting.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1 - Exams will be conducted in the form of students animating a real speech or a presentation in the classroom, and will assess the student s skills of interpreting this speech into the target language in the booth. The student s interpreting will be recorded and then evaluated in terms of interpreting skills, fluency, accuracy, intonation and having a good command of terminology.
2- Before each class, a text, presentation or title of the week s topic will be given to students. Students will be asked to gather information, if available, about the meeting concerned and speakers and gather terminological data from both the materials provided and from extra materials. Other assignments will be video and audio recordings of speeches for students to do listening exercises and transcribe as class preparation.

Assessment Criteria

1. Oral tests that are recorded will be evaluated in terms of preparation, use of skills learned during the semester and fulfilling the tasks required.
2. The attendance grade will be based on (i) the student s participation in the class, (ii) the quality of the answers given by the student to questions asked by the instructor and (iii) the student s contribution to creating a positive learning environment.
3. For grades on the border between two grades, active participation in the class will justify the higher grade.
