Course Objective

The course objective is to train students for preparing translations of subtitles and dubbing.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Identify audio-visual text types and their special features.
2   Applies analysis of products of art and the mass-media like films, advertisements and documentaries for translation purposes
3   Interpret audio-visual texts in terms of cultural transfer.
4   Applies translation strategies and techniques required for the respective audio-visual text types.
5   Knows the technical hardware and software required for translation of audio-visual texts.
6   Knows policies and restriction regarding the transfer of audio-visual products of source and target cultures.

1 Introduction Subtitling and dubbing: definitions and differences, required software and material
2 Films and documentaries Structure, monologues and dialogues in films, monologues and dialogues in documentaries
3 Technics Voice recording, time-code
4 Production of interlingual subtitles Line organisation, reduction, scene-subtitle organisation, rules
5 Problems related with subtitling Special cases, subtitling in two languages
6 Special types of subtitling Subtitles for deaf people
7 Characteristics of dubbing Monologues, dialogues, analogy with movements of the mouth
8 Mid-term exam
9 Audio-films Time and sequence adjustment
10 Audio-films Linguistic characteristics, speech style
11 Reduction, shifting, prosodic elements in subtitling Culture-specific characteristics
12 Non-linguistic voices/noise and music in subtitling and dubbing Practice on examples
