Course Objective

The objective of this course is to improve the skills acquired in the previous semester. Students are aimed to acquire the qualifications necessary to tackle real interpreting situations, to improve their skills of interpreting, and to learn how to work as a team.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Put into practice the simultaneous interpreting techniques they learned in the previous semester.
2   Enhance their competences to comprehend a speech they have heard for the first time, and express it in another language.
3   Interpret at a level of working successfully with challenging speakers with different accents
4   Perform long duration interpreting and exhibit perseverance required in real life situations.
5   Make it a habit to be up to date on the political, economical and social issues.

1 Review of basic principles, techniques, ethical issues and skills of conference interpreting.
2 Beginning exercises: short and simple sentences. Building semantic units, reformulation, simplification, omission, anticipation and cope with fast speaking speakers.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Exams
Throughout the semester two exams will be given:
Midterm (%30)
Final exam (%30)
Exams will be conducted in the form of students animating a real speech or a presentation in the classroom, and will assess the student s skills of interpreting this speech into the target language in the booth.
2. Homework and participation
Before each class, a text, presentation or title of the week s topic will be given to students. Students will be asked to gather information, if available, about the meeting concerned and speakers and gather terminological data from both the materials provided and from extra materials. Other assignments will be video and audio recordings of speeches for students to do listening exercises and transcribe as class preparation.

Assessment Criteria

1. Oral tests that are recorded will be evaluated in terms of preparation, use of skills learned during the semester and fulfilling the tasks required.
2. The attendance grade will be based on (i) the student s participation in the class, (ii) the quality of the answers given by the student to questions asked by the instructor and (iii) the student s contribution to creating a positive learning environment.
3. For grades on the border between two grades, active participation in the class will justify the higher grade.
