Course Objective

To introduce the relationship between human rights and the rule of law. This class will be focusing on historical, social, philosophical and sociological aspects of the issue.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the rule of law. 2   To be able to define human rights. 3   To be able to develop an understanding on the social and the historical basis of human rights. 4   To be able to explain the rise of modern law systems and human rights conceptions. 5   To be able to interpret the relationship between human rights and rule of law.

Week Subject Description 1 Introduction. 2 Natural law theory and natural rights. 3 Transformation of the meaning and the concept of the law and right. 4 The construction of the modern state: Social contract, natural law and "human rights".
