Course Objective

The objective of this course is to improve the skills acquired in the previous semester. Students are aimed to acquire the qualifications necessary to tackle real interpreting situations, to improve their skills of interpreting, and to learn how to work as a team.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   They can successfully put into practice the simultaneous interpreting techniques they learned in the previous semester.
2   They enhance their competences to comprehend a speech they have heard for the first time, and express it in another language.
3   They can interpret at a level of working successfully with challenging speakers with different accents.
4   They can perform long duration interpreting and exhibit perseverance required in real life situations.
5   They can improve their skills to interpret from the mother tongue into English as well as interpreting from English into Turkish.
6   They make it a habit to be up to date on the political, economical and social issues.

Course Contents

1 Review of basic principles, techniques, ethical issues and skills of conference interpreting.
2 Beginning exercises: short and simple sentences. Building semantic units, reformulation, simplification, omission, anticipation and cope with fast speaking speakers.
3 Class exercise. Speech topic: Law I Preparing terminology and reading other relevant resources.
4 Class exercise. Speech topic: Law II Preparing terminology and reading other relevant resources.
5 Class exercise. Speech topic: Environment Preparing terminology and reading other relevant resources.

Assessment Criteria

1. Oral tests that are recorded will be evaluated in terms of preparation, use of skills learned during the semester and fulfilling the tasks required.
2. The attendance grade will be based on (i) the student s participation in the class, (ii) the quality of the answers given by the student to questions asked by the instructor and (iii) the student s contribution to creating a positive learning environment.
3. For grades on the border between two grades, active participation in the class will justify the higher grade.
