Course Objective

Students will gain the essential knowledge of the mineral processing plant design, equipment selection and project development

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Student will gain the ability to use the experimental data obtained from laboratory studies for designing the mineral processing plants
2   Student will be capable of developing a mineral processing plant flowsheets
3   Student will have the capacity for obtaining the necessary information for the selection of the equipments
4   Student will be capable of designing the plant layouts
5   Student will be able to perform economic analysis of the capital and operation costs of the plants.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to mineral processing plant design Evaluation of the data about the mineral samples and discussion about the possible road maps Construction of the problem to find out the best flowsheet options according to the properties of the ore sample
2 Discussion on the problem and possible solutions including different mineral processing flowsheet options. Making a decision on the best method/method-combination and optimum circuit design. Constructing the basic flowsheet of mineral processing plant.
3 Design of the comminution circuit which is suitable to the planned mineral processing method.
4 Selection and sizing of the comminution and classification equipments
5 Selection and sizing of the supplementary equipments (pumps, stackers, reclaimer, stockpile etc
6 Development of the comminution plant layout and estimation of the capital cost.
7 Presentation of the project, 1st mid-term exam
8 Determination of the conditions for the applicability of pre-defined mineral processing method/method combinations. Adaptation of the laboratory data to the chosen method/method combinations.
9 Determination of the material balance throughout the selected flowsheet
10 Sizing of the selected equipments
11 Preparation of the plant layout project
12 Estimation of the capital and operation costs of the plant
13 Final assessment of the project
14 Presentation of the project
