Course Objective

The aim of this course is to
Introduce powder metallurgy, familiarize basic processes and aplication areas, explain the physical properties and behaviors of powders as of shape, size, distribution, flows, and packaging density, describe characterization and test methods of powders, give information about powder production technology, acquaint shaping and compression technics, inform about sintering theories, sintering mechanisms and characterization, familiarize the sintering furnaces and the effects of atmosphere conditions, and describe powder finishing.

4   To understand the shaping procedures and compression principles of powders

1 Introduction to powder metallurgy, basic process stages, application areas and history
2 Physical properties of powders; size, shape, surface area,packaging density, flow, agglomeration, particle size distribution
3 Compressibility and chemical characterization of powders
4 Powder production methods; mechanic and chemical processes
5 Powder production methods; electrolysis, thermal decomposition, atomization processes
6 Basic transactions applied to powders before shaping; grinding, blending, mixing, classifying,agglomeration and additives of lubricate and binders
7 Midterm I.
8 Shaping with Powder Enjection Moulding
9 Shaping with powder compression, green and theoretic density, particle behaviour during compression
10 Compression movements, set of mold and design, progressive compression, Cold Isostatic Pressing method
11 Sintering theories and basic principles
12 Midterm II.
13 Materials transport mechanisms
14 Sintering furnaces and atmosphere conditions
