Course Objective

With this course aimed to provide that the student learn basic work prenciples of treatment and planning machines used in radiotherapy .

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Able to use radiotherapy devices securely and continuously, in certain standards, without affecting the patient treatment process.
2   Able to determine probable failures in radiotherapy devices in advance.
3   Able to take safety procedures for failures in radiotherapy devices in advance.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Devices used in radiotherapy. Teletherapy devices, the historical developments (Slideshow)
2 Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) systems.
3 Arc-based devices, Tomoterapi (Fan Beam) device, Cone beam devices and robotic-arm devices (CyberKnife).
4 The general structure of medical linear accelerators used today. Modulator, electron gun, RF power source, the accelerator wave guide.
5 Collimator System. The general structure of collimators (electron-mode, photon mode). The structure of conventional collimators.
6 Multi Leaf Collimators (MLC). Collimator leakage.
7 The teletherapy units containing the radioactive source (Co60 and Cs137). The structure of teletherapy unit containing Co60 source.
8 Brachytherapy devices. Structure of the HDR brachytherapy devices which containing radioactive Co60 source and Ir192.
9 Structure of the simulator devices. The conventional simulators. Technicial specifications of the simulators.
10 The CT simulators and X-ray tube.
11 Treatment planning systems (TPS). Hardware specifications, software features. Radiotherapy network system.
12 The block cutters. The conventional and automatic block cutters.
