Course Objective

Marine microorganisms are essential to the maintenance of the biosphere, yet we have only fragmentary understanding of the diversity and function of the microbial life in
our oceans. The study of marine microbiology involves research of fundamental issues such as the evolution of life, the functioning of marine food webs, global climate
change, the fate of pollutants and the biodiversity of the ocean.

Aim : these courses will give advanced consideration to the full range of marine microorganisms with particular emphasis on their structural, physiological and
behavioural adaptations to the marine environment. Major aspects of the roles of marine microbes to be considered will be their interactions with other microbes and higher
organisms , marine microbial ecology, and the importance of microbes in the productivity of the seas and their contribution to the marine biomass and biotechnology.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To learn the general properties of marine microorganisms
2   To understand the interactions between microorganisms with other organisms
3   To understand the anaerobic metabolism
4   To have knowlege of regulation and standards related to microbial pollution indicators
