Course Objective

This course deals with all roles and functions of management related with family businesses. This course thoroughly covers concepts and phenomena related with fundamental business and management functions that enable family business efficient learning organizations in rapidly changing world. This course covers topics that are strategically important for management, policies and tendencies of family businesses. This course also deals with creation of an efficient organizational culture, supporting and maintaining of institutionalization and resolution of conflicts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define fundamental concepts and elements of Family Business Management.
2   Distinguish between fundamental concepts and elements of Family Business Management; diagnose factors affecting management to be successful and unsuccessful.
3   Define institutionalization process in Family Businesses.
4   Relate the results of managerial applications and changings to success or failure, be effective in conflict resolution.
5   Necessitate information and acquire needed information
6   Build, develop, apply and assess the results of a method to solve a problem within a scientific research context.

1 Management of family businesses: Basic concepts, differences and their reasons
2 The values of founders in family business, family business culture, ethical values and trust, organization and management structure, problems of generations after founders.
3 Institutionalization of family businesses, corporate governance and internal control practices.
4 Resolution of conflicts between cultures (family culture-business culture) in family businesses.
5 Leadership and CEO practices in family businesses.
6 Professionalization process of family business management, transition to professional management, family constitution.
7 Entrepreneurship in family businesses and the future of family businesses.
8 Strategic management practices in family businesses and basic competitive strategies. (Midterm exam will also be held this week after course hour)
9 Management and organization problems caused by growth in family businesses and their solutions.
10 Financial problems caused by growth in family businesses and their solutions.
11 Human resources practices in family businesses, differences, problems, recommendations.
12 Competitiveness in family business, branding of products and business and sustainability.
13 Management boards in family business, cooperation with foreign investors.
14 Internationalization of family businesses, overall evaluation and presentation of term projects.

Assessment includes; case studies, role playing, discussion, team work, presentation and written examination besides theoretical analysis. Students will be assessed according to their midterm and final examinations, presentation of term projects and participation (Please see: Course Policies and Rules).

Rules related to midterm and final exams are: Questions are not general but specific, case study analyses should be made by using of proper terminology. Following points will be considered on this matter. Ability to use terminology properly, degree of consistency between cause and effect relationships of concepts. The solution to the problems should be well grounded, scientific, logical and convincing. Readings related to the course and having a grasp of the topics are important.
