Course Objective

This course focuses on the concepts and methods of managing an organization. The overall course objective is to identify, apply, and evaluate techniques for structuring and resolving managerial problems. The main educational tool used in the course is the analysis and class discussion of case studies. Readings and videos are used to supplement the case analyses.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Identify and clearly define a problem/issue;

Assessment Criteria

All assignments and class participation are graded. The maximum points one can achieve for the entire semester is 100. Final course grades will be assigned as follows:

a) Class Participation: %25
Grading Criteria:
0 points Absent from class.
2 points In attendance, but makes no contribution.
2-6 points In attendance; makes contributions, which are mainly the restating of case facts.
6- 10 points In attendance and actively participates in class discussion. Your comments go beyond restating case facts: 1) you draw conclusions from the case; 2) you propose and defend a plan of action; and/or 3) you relate the case to an experience in your career/life.

Do not forget to receive a high participation grade you need to be well prepared to study questions, and have read/watch all assigned course material

All participation grades are announcement after each class via DEUZEM

b) Individual Written Assignments : 35%
For six of the classes, students are required to submit a written assignment

The individual written assignments are due by the beginning of class on the due date.
Please submit a Word document (not pdf). The document should be saved with you last name and assignment date (i.e. Arbak23.09.2019).

This paper is an individual effort; you may not work on this paper with other students.

The maximum length for each assignment is 600 words. Footnotes are excluded from this word limit, i.e. only the body of the paper is counted toward the word limit. A late papers receive 0 points.

All individual assignments should be submitted to DEUZEM before due date and time. The system automatically closes after due date and time.

Grading rubric for `Individual Written Assignments
Each bullet below reduces the grade by 1-2 points
Argument refutes case/article facts and/or is not supported by information in the case/article.
Essay does not stay focused on its core points and/or lacks any particular point of focus.
Response is too short and does not include enough detail.
An assertion is made but not defended, elaborated, not clearly articulated.
Too much fact restatement; not enough analysis and original thinking. Don t just restate facts, also consider what those facts mean and how they impact your conclusions and arguments.
Excessive poor grammar, run on sentences, etc.
Paper too long, i.e. it exceeds the stated word limit.
Paper is not saved with last name & date (i.e. Arbak23.09.2019).
Missing/improper footnoting. You are required to footnote all sources, including any assigned articles and case studies. The recommended form of footnoting is the APA Manual of Style. c) Group Assignments : 40%

First group project: 20%
The first group project is a case analysis, prepared by teams of 3 or 4 students.

Second group project 20%
The second group project is a case analysis, prepared by teams of 3 or 4 students.

For both group projects, each team member is required to complete a Team Evaluation Form in order to rate their work/effort as well as the work/effort of the other team members. Team Evaluation Form is available at Course Resources.

Grading on Group Projects is done according to a grading rubric. Grading rubric for Group Presentation is also available at Course Resources.

Students are required to submit their group name and list of members no later than the 3rd week after classes start. Only one submission is required per group.

Cases assigned to each group will be announced 2 weeks prior to Group Presentations.

1. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
2. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
3. Students are expected to participate actively in class discussions.
4. Students are expected to attend to classes on time.
5. Students are expected to prepare ahead of time for class.
