Course Objective

To instruct on how to prepare the production order of a woven fabric. To teach how a fabric design based either on fabric analysis or on creative work, in a fashion compatible with technological requirements and with the aim of use. To provide comprehensive knowledge on structural parameters and production methods which affect the process of design of simple and complex woven fabrics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To gain ability to select raw materials suiting the aim of use of fabric in the process of woven fabric design.
2   To gain ability to do structural design suiting the aim of use of fabric in the process of woven fabric design.
3   To gain ability to select appropriate technological instruments suitable for fabric structure in the process of woven fabric design .
4   To gain ability to design production plan and prepare production order of the fabric, designed with its physical and aesthetic properties.
5   To gain ability to relate aesthetic aspects with the physical and technological factors and ability to get computer aid

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to sectional warp machine, calculation of required warp length, reed width and reed count which are required for the production of a defined fabric.
2 Calculation of the required yarn amounts for he production of a defined fabric, warp balancing and preparation of warp production order.
3 Weaving calculations and the preparation of fabric production order.
4 Preliminary examinations in the process of fabric analysis. Raw materials and yarn analyses. Instructed in classroom as practically applied
5 Fabric weave analysis and the preparation of production order for a given sample fabric. Instructed in classroom as practically applied
6 Setting theories and application methods.
7 Intermediary examination
8 Calculation of the appropriate yarn count and setting for the design of fabric whose weave and unit fabric weight are given. Applied with the aid of certain computer programs
9 Basic principles and methods for figure development and fabric surface planning.
10 Relations between figure dimensions and the number of heald shaft movements in the design of figured fabrics for dobby looms.
11 Selection of yarn count and setting for the design of a single layer figured fabric with given fabric unit weight and figure width.
12 Selection of yarn count and setting for the design of an extra yarn figured fabric with given fabric unit weight and figure width. Supported by solving sample problems
13 Determination of yarn counts and settings for the design of a double fabric with required fabric unit width. Supported by solving sample problems
14 Design of centre warp stitched double fabrics and interchanging double fabrics.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lectures on course topics, to introduce sample fabrics in class, applied fabric analysis training, home works on fabric analysis and fabric design, problem solving, display of certain computer programs on fabric design.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Questions are asked in examinations in numbers to be selected from more and the full grade points are arranged according to the difficulty and time of answer based on a total grade point of at least 100. Instructions for homework preparation and evaluation criteria are declared to students in advance in a written form.

Assessment Criteria

Evaluation is made as based on a 100 full grade point and the grade point of success is 50. A grade point of 50, at least, is required in the final examination.

Course Policies and Rules

It is obligatory to attend 70 % of course hours. Any attempt of forgery is subject to discipline punishment.
