Course Objective

The objective of this course is to provide the students with the skills required to deal with the advanced areas of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles; the ability to apply principles in selecting appropriate accounting policies for effective financial reporting; the ability to evaluate a specific situation and alternatives by offering recommendations using ethical, professional judgement through financial reporting standards.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain the objective of financial reporting, the elements of the financial statements, and the related key accounting assumptions and principles.
2   Define and distinguish between cash basis and accrual basis accounting and the impact of each on the financial statements
3   To be able to generate general financial statements in order to compare the information provided in each. Explain the valuation and reporting of assets, liabilities and equity.
4   Identify the ethical implications inherent in financial reporting and be able to apply strategies for addressing them.

Assessment Criteria

1. The students will describe and compare the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
2. The students will structure the differences between accrual basis and cash basis.
3. The students will illustrate the valuation and reporting aspects of different financial reporting items.
4. The students will generate and evaluate general financial statements.
