DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Applied Geology

General Description

History

After establishment of Agricultural Faculty of Ege University in 1955, Geology education started with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Recep Egemen. Geology Department showed an important progress in 1975 and offered to the Geological Engineer and Geophysical Engineer education programmes within the new Earth Sciences department of the Engineering Faculty in the Ege University. Geology and Geophysics programmes, founded in 1978 and remained worked for 4 years in Earth sciences faculty of Ege University before becoming a part of the newly established Dokuz Eylül University. In 1982, all units in Earth Sciences Faculty of Ege University were assembled within the Geological Engineering Department of the Engineering Faculty of Dokuz Eylül University. In the department, in addition to standard laboratories, there is a mineral separation laboratory for radiometric age determination, soil and rock mechanics laboratory to determine physical and mechanical properties of soils and rocks and a fluid inclusion laboratory.

Profile of the Programme

To bring out the students' abilities and skills, improve the proficiency based on free-thinking and modern education with developing science and technology. To train engineers to meet the needs of the country and the region and make contributions to the development of our country with scientific activities, in the light of science. Thus, students can compete at national and international level to show entrepreneurship and to create his/her own values with the help of cooperation.
For this purpose, two undergraduate educations (formal and night education), and two graduate programs (MSc and PhD) as Economic and Applied Geology are going on. Faculty member of the Mineral Deposit-Geochemistry division and the Mineralogy-Petrography division support to Economic Geology program education. Applied and General Geology division faculties are also support to Applied Geology program. Our department contribute to the science of geology with different projects supported by TUBITAK and University founds.

The basic tasks of the legal obligations arising from Geological Engineering Department:
To give undergraduate and graduate level education,
To train lecturers,
To do scientific research and publications in national and international level,
To organize congresses, symposia, seminars and workshops in national and international level,
To be in contact with the alumni

The department has the following laboratories to conduct research:
Microscope laboratory, hydrogeology laboratory, general geology laboratory, optical mineralogy laboratory, petrography laboratory, mineral deposits laboratory, mineralogy laboratory, geochemistry laboratory, rock-soil mechanics laboratory, sample preparation laboratory, fluid inclusion-ore polishing laboratory, thin-sectin preparation laboratory, acid laboratory (paleontological preparation).

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). It is obligatory to register MAT5102 Numerical and Approximate Methods (3 0 0). The course can be taken either semester. In the case of one of these courses taken during the M.Sc. education, these are not obligatory. The registration must be noticed to the Institute during course registration period by the supervisor.
