General Description

History

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering of DokuzEylül University, was established in 1997. Since its establishment, education and research laboratories have been set up by the financial support of the State Planning Organization, TUBITAK and the University Scientific Research programs. In its first academic year of 1999-2000, 30 students were enrolled. Students are admitted also to M. Sc. and Ph. D. Programs within the quota announced by Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences every year.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; minimum 80/100 or 3/4 Cumulative Grade Point Average, minimum score of 60 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 70 from the graduate school entrance exam; A minimum (55) points taken in the last 5 (five) years from the central foreign language exams (English) conducted by OSYM, or a score equivalent to this score in the last 3 (three) years from any of the exams accepted by the OSYM.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The doctorate program consists of at least seven courses, thesis proposal, research course, PhD qualifing exam, seminar and thesis study with a minimum of 21 credits. Students who have fulfilled all the obligations including the ECTS specified in the Regulation of the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences can complete the program in at least three years. The student workload for a semester is 30 ECTS, and the total workload required for the completion of the PhD program is 240 ECTS.

Profile of the Programme

The objectives of DokuzEylul University Metalurgical and Materials Engineering the Doctoral degree programme are to graduate scientists who are investigative, innovative, self-confident, able to develop new ideas and techniques through innovative and creative thinking, possess problem solving and decision making skills, are conscious of work ethics and protectors of the natural environment as well as able to contribute to science and technology in their own fields. The program is carried out as Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.Current research topics that are mainly studied in the program can be summarized as materials science, extractive metallurgy, casting technologies, composite materials, biomaterials, nanomaterials, sensor technologies, aerospace and aviation materials, ceramic materials, surface modification techniques, corrosion, fracture mechanics and failure analysis. The educational and research activities continue with academic staff consisting of 4 professors, 5 associative professors,5 assistant professors, 1 lecturer and 8 research assistants, as of 2020. Students enrolled in the Ph.D. program have the opportunity to continue their education at universities with which we have agreements abroad within the framework of Erasmus program. In the Department, 15 laboratories (Mechanical Testing, Metallography, Characterization, Ceramic, Plastic Forming, Sample Preparation, Chemistry, Corrosion, Casting, Heat Treatment, X-Ray, Electronic Materials, Tribology, Simulation and Advanced Materials) operate in order to maintain educational and research activities. At least 30% of the courses given are in English.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Doctorate Graduates in the department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering can work as production, quality assurance and research and development engineers or as administrators in the automotive, defense, petrochemical, aerospace, energy, and white appliances sectors, integrated metal production plants, rolling mills, foundries, heat treatment, powder metallurgy, forging industry plants, ceramics, polymers and composite materials production and manufacturing facilities. Also our graduates can serve as researchers or academics in various research centers at home and abroad.

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). For Ph. D. students it is obligatory to take minimum 2 non-credit courses among "Ph. D. Programs Common Elective Courses" and be successful with grade (B) within 4 semesters of course taking period.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Related items of DokuzEylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades. The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

As stated in the qualification requirements, the students of the department must be successful in at least 240 ECTS credits including graduate and specialty courses, thesis proposal, doctoral qualifying exam and thesis exam.Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
