General Description

History

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary department that depending to the Institute of Science. The proposal aimed at the establishment of Biotechnology Department and opening of Master's Degree Programme was presented to the President's Authority of Dokuz Eylul University at the meeting dated 22.06.2009 of Institute of Science, Board of Institute, and by the examination at the Executive Board Meeting dated 08.10.2009 of the Chairman of the Board of Higher Education, it was decided to open as a Master's Degree Programme with thesis in formal education.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree) diploma; minimum score of 55 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 65 from the graduate school entrance exam; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Foreign Language Exam ( YDS ) or equivalent score from an exam accredited by YÖK or a minimum score of 70 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

2 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

In this programme, it is aimed to the acquisition of expertise in the disciplines stated in the below-mentioned Biotechnological Fields. These fields and disciplines are Microbial Biotechnology (Antibiotic Production, Ethanol Production), Enzyme Biotechnology Alternative Enzyme Purification Process, Production of Enzymes), Environmental Biotechnology (Reactor Designs, Hydrogen Production, Salt Removal from Waste Waters), Marine Biotechnology (Industrial and Medical Applications of Marine Macroalgae), Cell Culture (Endemic Plants and Anticancer-Antiapoptotic Applications), Biopolymers (Synthesis of Polymeric Absorbents, Their Biotechnological Applications) and Programme differs from eight Graduate Biotechnology Programmes currently available throughout Turkey by providing sufficiencies in terms of academic and industrial scale at the international level in the so-called areas of scientific expertise.

Students can participate in co-operative efforts with different universities in both domestically and abroad (Erasmus, foreign scholarships). Extremely positive feedbacks for our students is taken from relevant institutions.

Faculty members of Science Faculty, Chemistry Department, Biochemistry Division; Engineering Faculty, Environmental Engineering Department and Buca Faculty of Education, Chemistry Education Department are involved in interdisciplinary Biotechnology Master's Degree and substructure advantages of these institutions are taken.

Buca Faculty of Education, Chemistry Education Department; some of the existing facilities; HPLC (with UV and IR detectors), UV-Vis. spectrophotometer (with thermocouple unit), ultra pure water equipments, voltameter, incubator, flow cabinet, homogenizer, autoclave, oven, reactor systems, automatic titrator, evaporator, fixed power supplies, deep freeze, chromatography column systems, etc.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Have sufficient ability for Enzyme Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Marine Biotechnology areas of Biotechnology at academic -industrial scale and the international level,
2   Open to new subjects in the field of biotechnology, produce strategic solutions by awaring of the problems in this field in our country, have entrepreneur, developer capabilities in order to create employment,
3   Have sufficient ability for the basic methods and techniques used in biotechnology and take on responsibility in biotechnology processes,
4   Have sufficient ability for production, research and development in all industrial areas related to biotechnology in public and private sector; creating and managing the project at national and international level,
5   Have sufficient ability to use advanced information and communication technologies to work in the field of biotechnology,
6   Conscious on balance of the environment and life protection based on ethics studies in the field of biotechnology.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Rapid developments in the field of Biotechnology from the second half of the 20th century has also increased the need for specialized qualified human potential in this field. It is aimed within the scope of DEU., Biotechnology Master's Degree Programme that students will take part in medical as well as industrial, environmental and energy biotechnology studies with their international level expertises in science planned to be acquired. The increases in the number of specialized researcher in the field of Biotechnology in our country will play an important role for the rise of our biotechnology-based marketshare in the world by contributing the development of Research-Development activities, university-industry cooperation.

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). It is obligatory to register MAT5101 Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) or MAT5102 Numerical and Approximate Methods (3 0 0) or MAT5051 Methods of Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) with approval of the supervisor. The registration must be noticed to the Institute during course registration period by the supervisor.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Related items of Dokuz Eylül University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades.
The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS), M. Sc. Research (3 ECTS) and M. Sc. Thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
