Course Objective

To teach the structure of atom and molecules, energy levels, electromagnetic transitions, molecular bonding, atomic and molecular spectroscopy.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to explain electronic transitions of hydrogen atoms with the help of Bohr atom model
2   To express the behavior of molecules under electric and magnetic fields.
3   To be able to show vector model of atom and angular momentum pairings
4   Explain the concept of atomic spectroscopy
5   To be able to explain molecular structure and molecular spectroscopy methods
6   Explain nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance issues.

Course Contents

1 Atomic models, the size of the atom and the nucleus, the masses, the isotope concept.
2 Hydrogen atom of Bohr atom model,
3 Hydrogen atom energy levels, transition rates and selection rules
4 Atoms in magnetic field, atoms in electric field, thin structure of hydrogen atom, normal and abnormal Zeeman effect, Stark effect.
5 Vector model of atom, LS and JJ couplings
6 Optical transitions in multi-electron atoms, Hund rules, hyperfine structure.
7 X-ray spectrum, inner shells of the atom
8 Structure of Periodic System and Elements of Elements
9 Molecules dimensions and masses, Molecules in electric field, Molecules in magnetic field
10 Molecular spectroscopic methods, rotation and vibration spectroscopy
11 Chemical bonding, quantum theory, ionic and covalent bonds
12 Nuclear magnetic resonance
13 Electron spin resonance
14 Lasers

1. The homeworks will be assessed by directly adding to the mid-term scores.
2. Final examination will be evaluated by essay type examination technique

2. Every trial to copying will be finalized with disciplinary proceedings.
3. The instructor has right to make practical quizzes. The scores obtained from quizzes will be directly added to exam scores.
