Course Objective

The objective of this course is to provide with an understanding of the dimensions and nature of international hospitality operations. Specific topic covered will include planning, developing, marketing, and managing hotels in the international arena. It is designed to create a solid foundation for understanding and managing cultural diversity in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the factors that have contributed to globalization and a global economy.
2   Understand the composition, size and growth of international tourism and lodging.
3   Explain the factors affecting international hotel expansion into different regions of the world.
4   Compare and contrast both the positive and negative effects of cultural diversity in the workplace.
5   Examine and apply the principles of international human resource management for hotels.
6   Analyze and apply the development of international marketing strategy for hotels
7   Describe the issues and policies related to the selection and use of expatriate personnel, and identify advantages and disadvantages of hiring local nationals instead of expatriates.
8   Work effectively as part of a team participating and interacting in the group in a productive manner for himself/herself and for the group as a whole.
9   Demonstrate high communication skills in presenting a report.

Assessment Criteria

1. Examination will be based on understanding, synthesis and evaluation of the textbook and the lecture material.
2. Verbal participation will be graded.
3. Assignments will be based on the application of knowledge, analysis, problem solving and evaluative skills regarding international hotel management. The 5-page case report should have a cover page, thesis statement (i.e., clearly state the point of the case), an introduction, a brief overview of the company itself, a main focus on the case topic, a discussion on your insights and opinions about this this company and the case and its role in the international hotel management, a section of references cited.
4. Group project will be asessed on the wider application of knowledge to the design of an international hotel management issues. The 20-page project report should have a cover page, an introduction, a brief overview of the company, market or topic selected, international hotel management operations, their interaction and a clear conclusion based on analysis and references cited. Students will also be evaluated on their time management and teamwork skills.
5. Presentations will be assessed on preparation, understanding, knowledge, capacity to structure, oral communication skills, ability to respond to questions and manage discussions professionally.

1. It is obligatory to attend at least 70% of the classes.
