Course Objective

Describing and spectrophotometric properties of colour, standart light sources, colour measurement methods, lightness, chromaticity coordinates,CIE system, whiteness degree,colour tolerances, colour mixtures,determination of tristimulus values,colour differences, functions of colour measurement and calculating of dyeing recipes.

1   Describe the color and color harmonies
2   Relate the color and color measurement systems. Define and compare the light sources.
3   Infer and discuss the color values.
4   Compare the whiteness indexes. Calculate the metamerism, yellowness indexes and tristimulus values
5   Calculate the dyeing recipes.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to color science: definitions, history of color measurment, color circle, color harmonies and mixtures.
2 How can we see colorful Eye and brain. Structure and functions of eye. Mechanism of see.
3 Principles of electromagnetic radiation and natural and artifical light. CIE standard light sources.
4 Color science: standard observer, reflection values. Practice of calibration and measurement of reflection.
5 Color science: K/S values, Tristimulus values, Practice of Metameri ve K/S values.
6 Relations between tristimulus values and color. Calculation of tristimulus values from reflectionvalues.
7 Color systems (CIE, Munsell, Ostwald Systems), color scales, one and three dimension color diagrams).
8 Midterm exam
9 Measurement of whiteness: formulas of degree of whiteness, yellowness index, measurement of brightness and their practice.
10 Evaluation of color differences, formulas of color differences, pass/fail tolerance, and their applicaions for fastness.
11 Color measurement apparatus (with computer software), fundamental of color measurement, instrumental color measurement.
12 Recipe calculation (single dye and mixtures), basic dyeings and their measurements, calorimetric calculation, recipe correction
13 Practice of automatically recipe calculation using spectral photometer.
14 Practice of automatically recipe calculation using spectral photometer.
