Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the classification of ferrous and non-ferrous metallic materials, their standard representation and general properties, to introduce the structure-property-process-performance relationships and to gain the ability to select the appropriate metal alloy for a specific requirement.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   be able to define the classes and standard representations of metallic materials,
2   be able to compare specifications of metallic materials in related classes and other metallic alloys
3   be able to described applications of metallic alloys and properties required to be met,
4   be able to distinguish the strengthening mechanisms and their interactions and the effects on other properties in metallic materials,
5   be able to explain relationships between structures, properties and processing in nonferrous alloys,
6   be able to choose an appropriate metallic alloy for a particular engineering design and application,

Midterm exams, quizzes, and final exam will be performed as classical writtenexams with closed book-notebook. Assessment criteria and assignments related to homework and reports which requested from students will be announced on the Web and linked from the department home page.

Assessment Criteria

Class participation, attendance and discussion, are important and expected, and will be included in overall evaluation. Learning outcome (LO6) will be assessed by means of homework and oral presentation requested from students. Other learning outcomes will be assessed by means of exam questions.
