Offered to

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

Course Objective

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with cast irons, important casting materials, to give relationships between solidification of metals and alloys and cast structures, and to introduce molding materials used in industry, molding techniques, casting methods, probable casting defects and relation of casting and environment, and to enable students to design risering and gating system.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To describe standards, structures and properties required in applications of cast irons,
2   To explain the concepts and events related to casting technology,
3   To apply by observing on a casting sample under foundry conditions to the design principles of risering and gating
4   To compare casting methods by different point of view,
5   To define casting defects, their reasons and measurements that can be taken,
6   To discuss relationships between cast structures and solidification parameters,
7   To examine the casting processes in terms of environment and sustainability
