Course Objective

The objectives of this course is to provide perspective, background, methods, and data to introduce students to one of the central issues of environmental concerns, that surrounding the use of materials, and to equip them to make their own judgments. It does not aim to provide ultimate solutions. It introduces methods for thinking about and designing with materials when one of the objectives is to minimize environmental impact an objective that is often in conflict with others particularly that of minimizing cost. In addition, it is aimed to raise awareness about sustainability and sustainable development at the end of the course by explaining the life cycle assessment and its scope of the materials.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   be able to describe the environmental parameters to be considered in design, production and choice of materials
2   be able to evaluate material production, design and selection in terms of sustainability
3   be able to define basic concepts of Life-cycle assessment associated with materials
4   be able to explain the concepts and the processes associated with eco-audit,
5   be able to discuss future problems and potential solutions in the view of sustainability and future options
6   be able to examine a subject and / or an application in the industry related to the production, design or selection of ecological materials and presenting them orally and in writing.
7   be able to evaluate sustainable development and growth issues
