Course Objective

This course intends to give an overall conception of design expressions, methods, and techniques to be applied by students.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To define the domain of our profession in terms of design as a concept. (knowledge)
2   To differentiate different ways of how thought is transferred into various media via abstraction techniques (analysis)
3   To be engaged in design activities by ways of expression and presentation used in urban design studies (synthesis)
4   To use and apply different manual or digital techniques in design presentations (application)
5   To analyze the background of symbolic expressions and have knowledge in terms of their design techniques. (analysis)

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 - Getting acquainted, transferring the course content and process, explaining the evaluation methods - The concept of design
2 - Historical processes that direct the concept of design in different fields - The place of design in city planning and urban design disciplines
3 - Review of basic design principles and elements - Use of basic design elements in visual expression techniques
4 - Symbol, logo and infographic design techniques
5 - Visual expression styles and schematicization techniques in urban design (functional layout schemes, flow-charts, etc.)
6 - Presentation techniques (sketch, poster and layout)
7 - Converting a concept to a design element - Converting an object to a design element Assignment topics will be determined at this stage.
8 Design experiments through computer aided design softwares

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Within the scope of the course, theoretical descriptions will be made with conference presentations and readings. Students will be given the opportunity to experience the design stages with theoretical and, if necessary, practical explanations of design experts from different fields who will be invited in certain weeks. Throughout the semester, using group discussions and brainstorming methods, students will be asked to research, discuss, evaluate and present at certain stages of a design topic via class discussions.

Assessment Criteria

Topics related to concept of design (knowledge) and abstraction techniques (analysis) will be examined by the midterm (Assignment submission - Stage 1) and skills to analyze the background of symbolic expressions (analysis) will be examined by assignment presentations (Assignment submission - Stage 2), and ways of expression and presentation in design (analysis) and use and application of different manual or digital techniques (application) will be examined by the final exam (Assignment Submission - Final Stage).

Course Policies and Rules

This course will be held as lectures and visual presentations. The topics will be further focused in discussions, where the conception level of students can be tested. Student skills in visual perception and in evaluation and development of design techniques will be supported by interactive discussions to be held.
