Course Objective

The aim of this course is that the student shall know the most common cancers presence mechanism in Turkey, their finding and treatment, death process, communication with the patient and his/her family, psycho-social problems that the patient and he/his family experiences and shall plan nurse interventions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explains psycho-social problem that can be seen in the patient and the patient s family
2   Plans the necessities of the family in mourning process
3   Consults about supplementary medical practices used in oncology
4   Explains the physiopathology, treatment methods and care of the most common system cancers in oncology
5   Plans the hospital and home care of the patient and the patient s family by using evidence-based information
6   Behaves in accordance with ethical and legal principles on planning the care of oncology patient and the patient s family
7   Makes cooperation with the team in maintaining oncology patient s care

2 Communication with cancer patient, giving bad news
3 Perceiving of death by cancer patient, his/her family and health worker Mourning Process
4 Supplementary medical practices used in oncology and role of nurse
5 System cancers-1 Patient with lung cancer and nursing care
6 System cancers -2 Patient with GIS cancer (stomach and colon) and nursing care
7 System cancers -3 Patient with breast cancer and nursing care
8 Childhood cancers and nursing care Leukemia and lymphoma
9 Childhood cancers and nursing care Brain and bone tumors
10 Care/Follow-up of Patient that have finished treatment
11 Home care of cancer patient,
12 Family Burden and communication with family Life quality of cancer patient
13 Legal and Ethical Problems encountered at oncology
14 Care of Care givers
