Course Objective

to support graduates who plan to work with infants and toddlers with special needs, their families and related service providers in gaining the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Gain a perspective on the emotional reactions and the experiences of families of very young children with special needs
2   2. Gain positive attitutes toward the families of very young children with special needs
3   3. Conduct assessment in early intervention
4   4. Develop individualized service plans in early intervention
5   5. Work with very young children, their families and related service providers
6   6. Support families of very young children during transitions
7   7. Gain knowledge on early intervention programs conducted in Turkey

1 Development and learning in the first three years of life
2 The beginning of a journey with the special child joining the family: the reactions of the family and the close environment, the search for health and educational support services and other related experiences
3 Professional attitudes toward babies with special needs and their families
4 The family-centered approach
5 Early intervention program models
6 Child and family assessment
7 The development of the Individualized Family Service Plan
8 Midterm exam
9 Family-professional partnerships (communication skills, empowerment, advocacy, social support)
10 Team building in early intervention
11 Working with a very young child (communication, instruction, choosing play material and activities)
12 Supporting the child and the family during transitions
13 Early intervention programs in Turkey
14 Group discussion in light of actual cases
15 Final exam
