General Description

History

The Department of Performing Arts was opened in the 1982-83 academic year under the founding chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Özdemir Nutku for those who graduated from the undergraduate level in the fields of acting, dramatic writing, dramaturgy and stage design affiliated to the performing arts departments and who wanted to continue their education at the graduate level. The program, which was initially affiliated to the Faculty of Fine Arts, was later transferred to Dokuz Eylül University Institute of Social Sciences, and with the establishment of the Institute of Fine Arts in 2002, it carried out its activities under this roof.
Our program, which is one of the most well-established institutions providing graduate education in the field of performing arts in Turkey, is open to interdisciplinary approaches and has a theoretical structure.

Specific Admission Requirements

It is required to have a Bachelor's Degree in the same or related disciplines, a transcript and the GPA earned in the undergraduate degree. ALES is not required for applications to graduate programs in the admission of students to the Departments of Arts and Sciences in the institutes of the Conservatory programs and the programs of the Faculties of Fine Arts that accept students only by special talent exam. Final acceptance depends on the evaluation of the relevant academic unit commission. The admission conditions of international students are decided by the Institute Administrative Board.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The courses that the student has taken and succeeded in while enrolled in the graduate program of another university, which courses will be counted from the minimum course load after enrolling in the same graduate program at Dokuz Eylül University, based on the petition of the student, the application showing the course contents and transcript chart, the recommendation of the registration advisor, the opinion of the head of the major / department and the decision of the institute board of directors. The courses taken by students participating in exchange programs from the opposite university are accepted as elective or compulsory courses.

2 years, 2 semesters in 1 year, 15 weeks in each semester, 120 ECTS.

Profile of the Programme

The Performing Arts Master's Program aims to provide an education open to interdisciplinary studies on scientific and creative foundations in a wide range of courses for the high-level education of intellectual, creative and productive artists in the fields of acting, stage design and dramatic writing / dramaturgy.
The program language is Turkish.
The master's program consists of compulsory and elective courses. The program has a wide variety of courses ranging from theories and history of performing arts to interdisciplinary courses and courses in the field of stage design including special areas such as lighting, puppetry and costumes.
In addition to the elective courses offered by the Performing Arts Master's Program, with the approval of the advisor, the student has the right to choose courses from other programs of the Institute of Fine Arts related to the field of interest within the total credit obligation. The total credits of the courses that the student can take from other programs to count towards the course load cannot exceed 50% of the total credits required to complete the program.

Applications are open twice a year, in Spring and Fall semesters.

Thesis Evaluations
The student submits the thesis according to the spelling rules and procedures announced by the Institute of Fine Arts and presents it in front of the jury. In the jury defense, the jury decides on acceptance, rejection or correction of the thesis by absolute majority. For theses that are given a correction decision, the student defends the thesis again in front of the same jury by making the necessary corrections within 3 (three) months at the latest. The jury and submission procedures to be carried out after the jury that makes a correction decision are included in the 3 (three) month period. The student is advised to take these procedures and time period into consideration. 6   Having skills of that and being well equipped in solving problems,
7   With using the information and skill given by the education; being able to get proficiency to form an analyse, commentary, criticism.
8   Being able to use contemporary innovations and equipments in practices/applications about the field.
9   According to an aesthetic level, which suits the needs of contemporary developments and technology; getting the ability to improve new theoretical and practical approaches for the produced works of art with all aspects.
10   Being able to improve oneself by following the developments about science, art, design, technology and contemporary issues; internalizing life-long learning and its significance.
11   Being able to make analysis about the field, and to create a unique work of art a method or a design.
12   Having the ability to comment and criticise the demands of artistic environment, the common apprehensions, or happenings.
13   Knowing about the information and communication technologies useful for various different disciplines; and also ability to use those efficiently in periods of designing and producing.
14   Having at least one foreign language required for keeping up with the international development of the profession; and using this language efficiently.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of the master's program can pursue doctoral programs.
They can also continue their theoretical and practical studies in the fields of dramatic writing, dramaturgy, acting, stage design.

Exams, measurement and evaluation methods and their grading may differ for each course. Detailed information on this subject can be found in the courses section of the curriculum. In addition to midterm and final exams, the student's work performance during the semester can also be evaluated by evaluation methods such as reports, assignments, seminar presentations, art and design projects and performance studies. In order for a student to be considered successful in a course, the grade must be at least 75 out of 100. The student has to take the failed compulsory courses again. If he/she fails in elective courses, he/she can take another elective course instead of that course with the approval of the web registration advisor. Seminar course, specialization area and thesis study do not have credits according to the local credit system and are evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. Regarding exams and passing grades, Dokuz Eylül University Graduate Education and Training Regulations and Institute of Fine Arts Graduate Education and Examination Application Principles are applied. Course evaluation criteria are defined by the faculty member(s) teaching the course and given in the Course Description Form in the information package.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As a requirement of graduate education in the field of art education, courses may be completed with assessment methods such as art and/or design work and/or project and performance studies in addition to methods such as written exams and report presentations. Exams, measurement and evaluation methods and their grading may differ for each course. Detailed information on this subject can be found in the courses section of the curriculum. In addition to midterm and final exams, the student's work performance during the semester can also be evaluated by evaluation methods such as reports, assignments, seminar presentations, art and design projects and performance studies. Graduation Requirements

Students are obliged to know the relevant regulations, application principles and other regulatory provisions and principles of the institute, to show the interest and diligence expected of them to learn them, to follow the announcements made by the institute management regarding the teaching, course and exam programs, achievement status charts and other issues and published on the institute's web page.
1- In order for the student to complete the course phase in the Master's program; at least 7 courses, at least 21 local credits, 1 seminar course, at least 60 ECTS must be completed.
2- The local credits of the courses cannot be less than 21 credits in total.
3- Specialization area, seminar and thesis work are included in ECTS calculations and are not counted in local credits.
4- Courses are planned to be at least 30 ECTS in total each semester.
5- At least 7 courses, at least 21 local credits and at least 120 ECTS are required for graduation.
Students who fail to successfully complete the course phase, the credited courses and seminar course in the curriculum at the end of four semesters, or who fail to fulfill the success conditions / criteria stipulated by the higher education institution within this period; within the maximum periods, the student who fails in the thesis study or does not enter the thesis defense is dismissed from the higher education institution.

In order for the student to graduate from the master's program with thesis, at least one (1) scientific article related to his/her thesis must have been published or accepted for publication in national/international refereed journals until the student completes his/her master's degree, or national/international refereed journals about his/her studies related to his/her thesis Participation in scientific activities with at least one (1) published full-text paper or making at least one (1) art application/design in accordance with the graduate education and training regulations or having a national/international patent/utility model application for which the University is the applicant is required as a graduation requirement. In the scientific publications of the Master's Degree, the institution to which the student belongs must be shown as Dokuz Eylül University (GSE) and the student must be among the first two names. (For publications, the publication definitions specified in DEU Principles and Application Principles for Promotion-Appointment to Faculty Membership Positions are used.)
