General Description

History

The PhD Program was opened in the 1982-83 academic year under the founding chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Özdemir Nutku for those who have completed their undergraduate and graduate education in acting, dramatic writing, dramaturgy and stage design departments of performing arts departments and want to continue their education at the doctoral level. The program, which was initially affiliated to the Faculty of Fine Arts, was later transferred to Dokuz Eylül University Institute of Social Sciences, and with the establishment of the Institute of Fine Arts in 2002, it carried out its activities under this roof.
Our program, which is one of the most well-established institutions providing doctoral education in the field of performing arts in Turkey, is open to interdisciplinary approaches and has a theoretical structure.

Specific Admission Requirements

In the same or related disciplines, it is required to have a Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree with Thesis and an acceptable score in Language Proficiency and a general grade point average earned in undergraduate or master's degree with thesis. ALES score is not required for applications to doctorate / proficiency in art programs, Conservatory programs and the programs of the Faculties of Fine Arts that accept students only with special talent exams, and for admission to the departments and departments of the institutes. Final acceptance depends on the evaluation of the relevant academic unit commission. The admission conditions of international students are decided by the Institute Administrative Board.
Foreign Language 55 points is required for PhD admission to the Department of Performing Arts.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

The courses that the student has taken and succeeded in while enrolled in the graduate program of another university, which courses will be counted from the minimum course load after enrolling in the same graduate program at Dokuz Eylül University, based on the petition of the student, the application showing the course contents and transcript chart, the recommendation of the registration advisor, the opinion of the head of the major / department and the decision of the institute board of directors. The courses taken by students participating in exchange programs from the opposite university are accepted as elective or compulsory courses.

4 years, 2 semesters in 1 year, 15 weeks in each semester, 240 ECTS.

Profile of the Programme

The PhD Program in Performing Arts aims to provide an education open to interdisciplinary studies on scientific and creative foundations in a wide range of courses for the high-level education of intellectual, creative and productive artists in the fields of acting, stage design and dramatic writing / dramaturgy.
The program language is Turkish.
The program has a wide variety of courses ranging from theories and history of performing arts to interdisciplinary courses and courses in the field of stage design, including special areas such as lighting, puppetry and costumes.
In addition to the elective courses offered by the PhD Program in Performing Arts, with the approval of the advisor, the student has the right to choose courses from other programs of the Institute of Fine Arts related to the field of interest within the total credit obligation. The total credits of the courses that the student can take from other programs to count towards the course load cannot exceed 50% of the total credits required to complete the program.
Students should carefully follow the processes related to doctoral proficiency, thesis title determination exams and doctoral monitoring juries.

Applications are opened twice a year, in Spring and Fall semesters.

Thesis Evaluations
The student submits the thesis according to the spelling rules and procedures announced by the Institute of Fine Arts and presents it in front of the jury. In the jury defense, the jury decides on acceptance, rejection or correction of the thesis by absolute majority. For theses that are given a correction, the student defends the thesis again in front of the same jury by making the necessary corrections within 3 (three) months at the latest. The jury and submission procedures to be carried out after the jury that makes a correction decision are included in the 3 (three) month period. The student is advised to take these procedures and time period into consideration. 6   Having skills of that and being well equipped in solving problems,
7   With using the information and skill given by the education; being able to get proficiency to form an analyse, commentary, criticism.
8   Being able to use contemporary innovations and equipments in practices/applications about the field.
9   According to an aesthetic level, which suits the needs of contemporary developments and technology; getting the ability to improve new theoretical and practical approaches for the produced works of art with all aspects.
10   Being able to improve oneself by following the developments about science, art, design, technology and contemporary issues; internalizing life-long learning and its significance.
11   Being able to make analysis about the field, and to create a unique work of art, a method or a design.
12   Having the ability to comment and criticise the demands of artistic environment, the common apprehensions, or happenings.
13   Knowing about the information and communication technologies useful for various different disciplines; and also ability to use those efficiently in periods of designing and producing.
14   Having at least one foreign language required for keeping up with the international development of the profession; and using this language efficiently.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of the doctoral program work as faculty members in various institutions and levels of performing arts education. They continue to work in the fields they graduated from (designer, actor, dramaturg).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

As a requirement of graduate education in the field of art education, courses may be completed with assessment methods such as art and/or design work and/or project and performance studies in addition to methods such as written exams and report presentations. Exams, measurement and evaluation methods and their grading may differ for each course. Detailed information on this subject can be found in the courses section of the curriculum. In addition to midterm and final exams, the student's work performance during the semester can also be evaluated by evaluation methods such as reports, assignments, seminar presentations, art and design projects and performance studies. In order for a student to be considered successful in a course, the grade must be at least 75 out of 100. The student has to take the failed compulsory courses again. If he/she fails in elective courses, he/she can take another elective course instead of that course with the approval of the web registration advisor. Seminar course, specialization area and thesis study do not have credits according to the local credit system and are evaluated as successful or unsuccessful.
Regarding exams and passing grades, Dokuz Eylül University Graduate Education and Training Regulations and Institute of Fine Arts Graduate Education and Examination Application Principles are applied. Course evaluation criteria are defined by the faculty member(s) teaching the course and given in the Course Description Form in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Students are obliged to know the relevant regulations, codes of practice and other regulatory provisions and principles of the institute, to show the interest and diligence expected of them in order to learn them, to follow the announcements made by the institute administration and published on the institute's web page regarding the teaching, course and exam programs, achievement status charts and other issues throughout their education.

1- In order for the student to complete the course phase in the PhD program; at least 7 courses, at least 21 local credits, 1 seminar course, at least 60 ECTS must be completed.
2- The local credits of the courses cannot be less than 21 credits in total.
3- Specialization area, seminar and thesis work are included in ECTS calculations and are not counted in local credits.
4- Courses are planned to be at least 30 ECTS in total each semester.
5- Graduation requires at least 7 courses, at least 21 local credits and at least 240 ECTS.
Students who fail to successfully complete the course phase, the credited courses and seminar course in the curriculum at the end of four semesters, or who fail to fulfill the success conditions / criteria stipulated by the higher education institution within this period; Students who fail in the thesis study or fail to enter the thesis defense within the maximum periods are dismissed from the higher education institution.

Doctoral program students are required to have at least one (1) scientific article related to their thesis published or accepted for publication in national/international refereed journals until the completion of their education and to have made at least one (1) oral, written or visual presentation in national/international refereed scientific events about their work related to their thesis or to have a national/international patent/utility model application for which the University is the applicant and to have made at least one oral, written or visual presentation in national/international refereed scientific events about their work related to their thesis. In scientific publications, the institution to which the student belongs must be shown as Dokuz Eylül University (GSE) and the student must be among the first two names. (For publications, the publication definitions specified in the DEU Principles and Application Principles for Promotion-Appointment to Faculty Membership Positions are used.)
