General Description

History

The undergraduate program of the Department of Museology was established in 2010 and started to accept its first undergraduate students in 2014. Master programs started in the same year.

Specific Admission Requirements

Providing high school diploma and being placed in the program as a result of the Student Selection Examination conducted through the central system at the national level. Student placement procedures through central system are carried out by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Relevant information on the placement examinations is available at http://www.osym.gov.tr.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order for students to complete their education successfully in our faculty, their GPA (Grade Point Average) should be at least 2.00. Final year students who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 are entitled to take a one-course examination in order to increase the GPA if they are able to fulfill the condition of a GPA of 2.00 from the courses included in the program of the last four semesters. Those who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 through one-course examination are entitled to take a mid-term exam, final exam or make-up exam from the courses of the last four semesters. The students benefit from this right of examination in the exam period during the semester in which the courses are opened. The students who would like to benefit from this right of examination declare the exams that they will take at the beginning of the semester during registration.
In order to graduate from Department of Museology, to successfully complete all the courses (equivalent to 260 ECTS) included in the program and to acquire at least 2.00 GPA (grade points average) on a 4.00 scale are the essential conditions for qualification.

Profile of the Programme

The undergraduate of the Department of Museology was established in 2010 and started to accept its first undergraduate students in 2014. Master programs started in the same year. Turkish is the language of instruction, professional English and Ancient Greek as compulsory subjects are also available. The curriculum covers a wide interest area including historical (archaeology, numismatic, history of art etc.), cultural (anthropology of art, intangible cultural heritage etc.) and applied (technical drawing, audiovisual documenting etc.) courses. The aim of the Department of Museology is to train qualified museology professionals for national and international academic platforms. To this aim, students are expected to develop their professional skills by participating in a variety of academic activities in scientific excavations and in museums all over Turkey in order to convert their theoretical knowledge to practical experience.

2 Students are expected to be aware of the interdisciplinary interaction between the field of Museology and other fields and expected to acquire the terminology and basic concepts of other fields.
3 Students are expected to acquire knowledge on the theoretical and practical aspects of Museology.
4 Students are expected to assess their acquired knowledge in an inquisitive and productive approach.
5 Students are expected to interpret their acquired knowledge by integrating it to knowledge coming from different fields.
6 Students are expected to detect, describe problems of the museums and offer solutions to these problems.
7 Students are expected to set up and develop projects related to Museology.
8 Students are expected to follow scholarly publications related to the field in both national and international levels.
9 Students are expected to express their knowledge and skills both verbally and in writing
10 Students are expected to use current technology related to the field.
11 Students are expected to acquire basic skills for drawing small objects and architectural drawing
12 Students are expected to follow cultural, scholarly and ethic rules in their professional life.
13 Students are expected to acquire knowledge on the legal procedure about museums and heritage issues.
14 Students are expected to acquire and use their skills of ancient/old languages professionally.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Students who have graduated from Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Museology, have the opportunity to pursue an academic career in universities and institutes. They may work as professionals in various museums under the General Directorate of Monuments and Museums, Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection board, private museums, General Directorate of Foundations, Mineral Research and Exploration Institute, special provincial administrations and municipalities and in KUDEB units.

Access to Further Studies

The students who have completed their undergraduate education successfully can continue their studies in graduate programs (second cycle) in their own field or related fields provided that they pass the examination ALES and have sufficient knowledge of English.

Education plan -50 compulsory and 19 optional total of 69 courses, electives rate of 27% -University / Higher Education Elective Courses:5 / 669 course, the rate was 7.2% -Shared Pool Lessons: 2/69 courses, 2.9% -Practical Lessons:10 / 69 course, the rate of 14.5% -This program is a prerequisite for all courses and from the courses mandatory. 30 ECTS credit loas courses so that each period between 2 and 8 ECTS.

Graduation Requirements

Student has to complete required and elective courses (equivalent to 240 ECTS) which stated under the topic of Course Structure Diagram with Credits and to acquire at least 2.00 GPA (grade points average) on a 4.00 scale.
