Course Objective

Teaching of scale drawing of minor objects discovered during archaeological excavation. Applied drawing skills of minor objects. Applied recording and scientific cataloguing of findings regarding their material, color, surface treatment, slip, glaze and inclusions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to draw in scale a pottery objects (intact, fragments of rim or base) by measuring diameter, height, thickness of wall and inclination. 2   To differentiate the color, inclusions of clay and the surface treatment slip, glaze etc. 3   To use the appropriate and correct terminology defining the objects related with their techniques and features. 4   To achieve suitable cataloguing information. 5   To have the skills for finding parallels of the object in the literature and investigate comparisons in order for further research and dating criteria.

Week Subject Description 1 Introduction of the material and tools necessary for drawing 2 Narrative explanation of a drawing and to teach how to use the tools 3 Explanation of an object with comparing its drawing, to give definitions of i.e. profile and view 4 Ask the student to drawn a complete modern pot with assistance and control. 5 Ask the student to draw an inverted rim fragment under control. 6 Ask the student to draw an outturned rim fragment under control. 7 Ask the student to draw an inverted rim fragment and an outturned rim fragment under control. 8 Ask the student to draw a foot fragment under control. 9 Ask the student to draw a foot fragment under control and catalogue them. 10 Ask the student to draw a rim and foot fragment under control and catalogue them. 11 Ask the student to draw a fragment with ornament with control and catalogue them. 12 Ask the student to draw a jug fragment with handle under control and catalogue them.
