Course Objective

This course aims at providing the students with knowledge about the field of applied linguistics and enable them to compare and contrast various trends, approaches and theories in applied linguistics. The course also aims at providing information about the applied areas of language such as second language acquisition, teaching methods and semiotics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   describe, in general, the basic approaches and theories in applied linguistics
2   explain the theories on second language acquisition using comparisons
3   compare various language teaching methods
4   analyse semiotically any form of linguistic data
5   evaluate the current policies on language within the perspective of language planning and linguistic imperialism

1. Learning outcomes 1-3 and 5 will be evaluated via the questions asked in the mid-term and final exams.
2. Learning outcome 4 will be evaluated via assignments and presentations.

1. 70% class attendance is obligatory.
2. 2- Absence from classes will not be considered as an excuse for late submission of the homework assignments/projects.
3.3- Cheating and plagiarism attempts in assignments and exams will be evaluated with a 0 (zero) grade.
