Course Objective

The aim of this course is to lead the students to discover the relation between language and gender, to questionise the sterotypical gender roles which are expressed and sustained by language in the society and to build up a critical view to the students about how the gender is morphologically, semantically or pragmatically coded and constructed in language

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students' stating the outlines of the relation between language and gender
2   Explain the representation of gender in language by using examples
3   Discuss the relationship between social gender roles and the language
4   Questionise the sterotypical gender roles in visual and written texts
5   Questionise the relationship between society-language-gender
6   Doing research on the relation between language and gender, and discuss the findings in this context

4 Constituting the gender: denotation, connotation and euphemism
5 Socialisation, Social Knowledge, social role and social identity
6 Sterotypication and categorisation
7 The relationship between language and cognition and social gender
8 Mideterm Exam
9 Cognitive Models, scheme and frame theory
10 Constructing categorisation and ideology
11 Prototypes and sterotypes
12 Political correctness/inappropriateness
13 Language renewal in order to represent both genders in language; liberal and radical approaches.

LO 1-6: The assesment will be held by taking homeworks, project paper, presentations and attendance to the course into consideration.
