Course Objective

The aim of this course is to help students develop awareness about critical thinking and text analysis and discuss the methods, strategies and theoretical issues influencing the preferences of the literary translator in the frame of historical, social and cultural contexts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   In this course the students will develop the necessary skills to translate the literary texts.
2   They will be able to explain their personal strategies and preferences.
3   They will be able to analyze the ideologies embedded in the text.
4   They will be able to analyze the meanings referred to by figurative language, metaphors, intertextuality.
5   They will be able to find solutions to overcome the problems encountered in every stage of the translation process.

2 Poetry as a main genre and its sub-genres
3 Discussion on the translation of a lyric poem
4 Experimenting translations of lyric poems from Turkish into English
5 Specifics of Epic Poetry
6 Discussing the translation of an epic poem
7 Experimenting with the translations of some epic poems from Turkish into English
8 Midterm
9 Satire in English notes
10 Descriptive excerpts and their translations
11 Experimenting translations with some descriptive Turkish texts
12 Specifics of narrative texts
13 Discussion on the translation of a narrative text
14 Experimenting with the translation of some Turkish narrative texts
