General Description

History

Department of Surgical Nursing was established at September 26, 1994 as a department of Institute of Health Science by approval of the Senate. Our academic staff are consisted of members of Department of Surgical Nursing of the Nursing Faculty and members of the Faculty of Medicine Department of General Surgery. Surgical Nursing MSc program has been started education at September 26, 1994. Program duration is 2 years (1 year is course, 1 year is thesis study. The language of program is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Bachelor s Degree; having obtained at least 55 from relevant branch of Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES) or from exams equivalence of which are accepted; in case of graduate of Faculty of Medicine having obtained at least 50 from Medical Specialty Exam (TUS); having obtained at least 50 from Foreign Language Exam (YDS) or from other foreign language exams equivalence of which are accepted or at least 55 from the exam held by DEU Foreign Languages Institute. Transcript; having obtained at least 65 from the Post Graduate Science Exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (2 ECTS), and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS) credits. İn total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

Surgical Nursing Msc programme started education at 1994. The objectives of this programme are provide contemporary knowledge to meet roles and responsibilities of surgical nurses; to use the current knowledge and skills on surgical patient care management. Program contains 4 Compulsory Course each semester and elective courses in different Surgical Nursing fields. Students may take courses from different programs and university.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   The student has the professional and up-to-date knowledge in order to carry out the surgical nurse roles based on post graduate competencies, and develops this knowledge.
2   The student has the sufficient knowledge of information technologies, technical equipment and devices necessitated by surgical nursing.
3   The student uses the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in the field of surgical nursing.
4   The student integrates her/his knowledge in the field of surgical nursing with knowledge from different disciplinary and analyses, synthesizes, interprets this knowledge to create new information.
5   The student conducts a planned study aiming to determine and solve the issues in the field of health.
6   The student uses technological devices including computer and other specific health devices at an advance level and carries out the necessary reviews and develops solutions.
7   The student has life-long learning skill.
8   The student analyses the basic nursing concepts of -human, health, environment and nursing-
9   The student carries out patient care by knowing patient physiopathology.
10   The student carries out patient care by being aware of the basic concepts of nursing.
11   The student carries out inter-disciplinary and intra-disciplinary team collaboration by using proper communication techniques.
12   The student determines analyses, synthesizes, and manages evidence based care of the patient s pre/intra/post-surgical intervention period needs.
13   The student takes part in scientific activities which will contribute to the development of surgical nursing.
14   The student reports her/his study; publishes it in a national journal or presents it in a scientific assembly.
15   The student takes part in projects carried out by different disciplines.
16   The student knows at least one language in B2 level according to the CEFR, and communicates in written and orally.
17   The student contributes to the health policy studies in order to develop the field of health.
18   The student knows the importance of ethical principles and ethics committees and acts ethically.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of this program can work as a nurse specialist in the field of Surgical Nursing.

Assessment of students was done with 1 midterm examination, 1 final examination, homework and project studies. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
