Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide the students about history, theories and methodologies of ethnomusicology discipline; and to bring ethnomusicological perspective to them for theorical and applied works.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain the historical outline of Ethnomusicology,
2   Explain why and how the music can be study in its cultural context,
3   Demonstrate the research topics and approaches in Ethnomusicology with examples,
4   Explain the theoretical and methodological relationship between ethnomusicology and other disciplines (anthropology, sociology, communication sciences etc.)
5   Discuss the Ethnomusicological approach and perspective problem,
6   Define the fundamental research methods and techniques of Ethnomusicology,
7   Define the fundamental contextual problems of Ethnomusicology,
8   Research and report a topic about hystory and theory of Ethnomusicology.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Courses
Lectures and presentations with visual examples introduce students to fundamental theories and methodological features of Ethnomusicology. Lectures also consolidate with reading the works of principal ethnomusicologues; discussion of interdisciplinary nature of ethnomusicology and especially relation between ethnomusicology and other disciplines [historical musicology, cultural anthropology, folklore, linguistic, cultural studies etc.]
Assignments
Assignments aim to orientate the students to research on specific topics; and to presentation and discussion of results in class environment. Assignments are perform as individually or group work.
