Course Objective

This course aims to build a structure about melody and rhythmic, genres,instruments and concepts on Turkish Folk Music.

1   Auditorily distinguish rhythmic features of folk music
2   Define and classify rhythmic features of Turkish Folk music
3   Identify instruments of Turkish Folk music and recognize them visual and auditory
4   Explain concepts of melodic structure in folk music

2 Rhythmic structure in the Turkish Folk Music, long air and broken air (lit. Uzun hava and kırık hava)
3 Aerophones and idiophones in the Turkish Folk Music
4 Chordophones in the Turkish Folk Music
5 Relation of genres and music in the folk literature
6 Long air genres such as bozlak, ağıt, maya
7 Long air genres such as yüksek hava, hoyrat, gurbet havası
8 Broken air genres such as zeybeks and dance airs
9 Scale: definitions and types
10 Scale examples and chords on the baglama
11 Local and regional terminology in the Turkish Folk Music
12 Playing technics on the balgama such as şelpe
13 Ministrelsy tradition
14 Mid-term exam

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Instructor will explain the basic concepts of Turkish Folk music and argue them with students. Features of genres, instruments and performance will be emphasized through visual and audio recordings.
