Course Objective

Providing the students, who will be professional opera singers, get the basic knowledge on music theory.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The student knows the basic concepts of musical notation.
2   The student knows the concepts of rhythm, tempo, measure and beat.
3   The student can explain the all intervals in/wider than an octave, and the all inverted intervals.
4   The student can explain the concepts of tonality.
5   The student can recognize the tonality of any music piece.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 "Intervals". A large repetition of the topics that learned in the previous term.
2 "Intervals". Explanation of the intervals that larger than an octave.
3 "Intervals". Inversion of the intervals.
4 "Scale" in music. Explanation of the scale, mode, makam and tonality concepts.
5 "Tonality". Explanation of the Major scale.
6 "Tonality". Explanation of the Minor scale.
7 "Tonality". Explanating the kinds of Minor scale; eolian, harmonic and melodic minors.
8 "Tonality". Major and minör tonalities that own the same key signatures (Releated tonalities).
9 "Tonality". Scale degrees.
10 "Tonality". Explaining the methods for determination the tonality of a music piece.
11 "Measures". Explaining the measures in according to their types.
12 Repetition of the topics that learned in 11th week.
13 Human voices.
14 Midterm Exam
