Course Objective

This course will cover the basic concepts of heredity and current advances in biotechnology - such as cloning, recombinant DNA technology, DNA fingerprinting and gene therapy. This course will emphasize the applications, social consequences and ethical implications of biotechnology in medicine and agriculture.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. analyse the structure and function of nucleic acids in living systems
2   2. describe DNA replication and recombinant DNA,
3   3. demonstrate an understanding of the process of protein synthesis
4   4. explain how mutations in DNA affect protein synthesis
5   5. Show how the results obtained by Mendel lead to the development of the law of segregation
6   6. Explain what is meant by the terms character, gene, allele, locus, mutation, dominant,
7   7. Explain what is meant by the terms recessive, genotype, phenotype, homozygous, heterozygous
8   8. Apply the principles of inheritance to solve problems
