Course Objective

This course presents basic concepts and problem solving skills on the subjects of the basic properties of matter, fundamental laws, atomic structure, atomic models, the periodic table, chemical bonding, chemical reactions, and gases to teach students.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Apply the basic laws of chemistry.
2   Compare the atomic structures.
3   Draw Lewis structures of compounds
4   Explain molecular geometries according to VSEPR theory.
5   Understand the general properties of gases and gas laws.
6   Make all kinds of calculations for the reaction stoichiometry of the reaction to calculate the theoretical and percentage yields

1 Properties of Matter and Measurement: Mass, Volume, Classification of Matter, SI Units
2 Structure of the Atom and Atom Theories: the historical development of atomic theory (Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr), Discovery of the electron and proton
3 Structure of the Atom and Atom Theories: Quantum numbers and electron orbitals, the electron distributions
4 Periodic Table and atomic properties: the elements in the periodic table, and classification, Atomic Radius, Ionization Energy, Electronegativity.
5 Chemical Bonding I: Lewis Theory, ionic and covalent compounds, Lewis Structures, VSEPR Theory
6 Problem applications on related topics
7 Chemical Bonding II: Hybridization, Intermolecular forces, Van der Waals force, dipole-dipole interactions, hydrogen bonding, metallic bonding
8 Midterm exam
9 Chemical Bonding II: Hybridization, Intermolecular forces, Van der Waals force, dipole-dipole interactions, hydrogen bonding, metallic bonding
10 Chemical Reactions and Chemical Equations: Chemical equation and stoichiometry
