Course Objective

To comprehend the basic concepts and principles of plant growth and development.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand and describe water relations and mineral transport in plants
2   Understand plant biochemistry and metabolism, including energy and carbon assimilation and nitrogen assimilation
3   Understand and describe plant growth and development, including embryogenesis and early development, flowering, and the role of plant hormones
4   Develop and analyze laboratory skills that allow a student to perform experiments and analyze data based on the concepts listed above.

1 Laboratory general rules and preparation of chemical solution
2 qualitative and quantitative determinations of some substances in plant tissues
3 Measuring of osmotic potentialin plant tissues
4 Effect of osmotic potential on seed germination
5 Experiments for membrane permeability
6 Observation of transport of water and water soluble substances and transpiration
7 Extraction of photosynthetic pigments and determination of chlorophyll (Chl a, b)
8 Mid-term exam
9 Separation of photosynthetic pigments by chromatography and analysis of starch in plant tissues
10 Observation of respiration and fermentation in plants
11 Determination of ascorbic acid content Experiments about effects of plant growt regulators on plant growth
12 Second written midterm exam
13 Investigations on effect of selective herbicide (2,4-D)in plants
14 Observation of epinasty in tomato leaves
15 End-of-term exam
