Course Objective

Middle Ages form an important part of World History. Teaching culture and civilization of Middle Ages and learning of the 11 century that begin with the split of the Roman Empire until its destruction are the main objectives of this course.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understands the history of the Roman Empire after Christianity
2   Understands the political and demographic balance of the Northern Mediterranean and the Balkans during the Middle Ages
3   Perceives the process of birth of Islam, the impact of the process to world politics and culture
4   Understands the culture and social and economic life of Turks after Islam and pre-Ottoman
5   Comprehends characteristics of western and eastern cultures in the Middle Ages and the effects of the two cultures to one another

6 The strengthening and spread of Islam: the Umayyad period
7 Age of Islamic Culture: the Abbasids
8 Midterm Exam
9 Turks in Islam, Increaseof the political power of Islam, Karahan Turks and Ghaznavids
10 Civilization and history of the Seljuks, the conquest of Anatolia, culture of the Seljuks in Anatolia
11 The Crusades
12 Mongols, emergence, and cultural and historical consequences of the Mongol invasion in the Near East
13 Near East political status after the Mongol invasion, the Mongol states and the Anatolian principalities
14 Turkish presence and culture outside Anatolia in the late Middle Ages, Mamluks and Timurids End of the Middle Ages: the Renaissance and Reformation in Europe
