Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to get the teacher candidates comprehend the political, cultural, and civilization history of the Ottoman Empire from the establishment (1299) until Small Kaynarca Treaty (1774).

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognizes political and economic characteristics of Anatolia and Rumelia during the periods of establishment and growth.
2   Recognizes the Institutions of the Ottoman Empire in the classical era.
3   Comprehends, the political, economic and cultural characteristics of the classical era Ottoman Empire
4   Explains the cultures that Ottoman culture influenced by and the reasons for them.
5   Understands the elements that has made Osmanlı State a global empire

2 Interregnum Period and Re-organization (From Mehmet the first period to the end of Murat the second period)
3 Conquest and Empire period of Istanbul / TheConquerer's period
4 Ottoman Empire to become a world power / The period of Suleiman the Magnificent
5 Developments in Europe and the Ottoman Empire
6 Culture and civilization of the Ottoman Empire from the periods of establishment to growth. OttomanDynasty and the inheritance system.
7 Organization and function of the palace
8 Midterm Exam
9 Divan-I Hümayun
10 Soil regime and the system of feudal tenure
11 Ottoman cities, economic activity and tax scheme
12 The legal system and the social structure of the Ottomans Science in the Ottoman Empire. The education system and madrasas.
13 Period and the reasons for pause. (Upto the II.Viyana siege of 1683 from the period of Selim II)
14 Developments till the Treaty of 1774 from the siege of Vienna.Tulip Era and the first reform efforts.
15 Final Exam
