Course Objective

In scope of this course, it is tried; to be introduced textbooks, student work books, and teacher's guidebooks approved by the Ministry of Education to teacher candidates; to be examined social studies curriculums by a critical perspective; to be taught qualifications and features which should be in a textbook; to be made applications on Social Studies text books; and to be showed according to which criteria the text books, student work books should be examined and chosen and whether these books are appropriate for the elementary students' learning capabilities.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to examine the social studies curriculums by a critical perspective.
2   Meaning knowledge of the basic terms which are mentioned on the course of examinations of social studies textbooks
3   Knowledge of basic principles regarding examination and evaluation of textbooks
4   To be able to understand the main structure and the functioning system concerning selection and writing, distribution of books in the Turkish National Education system
5   To be able to understand the basic features of a good textbook
6   To be able to apply the scientific method in the book selection process
7   To be able to create an identity of teacher that is specific and is suitable for the teacher's qualifications
8   To be able to create alternative perspectives relating to the selection of textbooks
9   To be able to use the basic principles related with selection of books in the possible process of teachership
10   To be able to create a sample textbook

7 PART VI: Textbook Analysis (Case Study). Analysis of the social studies student's the course book (textbook), workbook taught in elementary school and teacher's guide book according to the essential features that should be in the textbook.
