Course Objective

This course is about understanding the fundamental principles of effective speaking and writing. The course aims to give students speaking and writing skills by making practices and highlighting the importance of body language and intonation.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To have knowledge about the types of speaking and writing
2   To know basic concepts covered in effective writing and speaking studies
3   To be capable of writing and speaking effectively.
4   To have the ability to use course s terminology and to have knowledge about Turkish grammar.
5   To have the ability to notice and correct narrative mistakes.

Course Contents

1 Effective speaking and writing concepts: Basics
2 Speaking types; Factors affecting speaking; effective techniques; the importance of body language.
3 Narrative types used in speaking. Importance of word accent and intonation.
4 Practices made on speaking examples: Importance of diction.
5 Student presentations: Practices of delivering a pre-prepared speech. Correcting mistakes.
6 Student presentations: Practices of delivering a pre-prepared speech. Correcting mistakes.
7 Student presentations: Practices of delivering a pre-prepared speech. Correcting mistakes.
8 Mid-Term exam
9 General Evaluation
10 Ways of narrowing a topic: Explanation, giving examples, making comparisons, quoting, use of statistics etc.
11 Writing techniques: Explanatory, narrative etc.
12 Working on given examples and doing writing exercises
