Course Objective

To show History of Religions themes, methods and its relations to other religious sciences as an independent discipline; to ensure understanding of major features of historical and living religious traditions and faiths.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learn the nature of problem of defining the religion, and different definitions of religion, and theories about the origin of the religion
2   Perceive History of Religions themes, methods and its relations to other sciences
3   Grasp the differences between traditional Islamic sciences and modern Religious Studies in terms of their methods and points of views
4   Learn venture of History of Religion in Islamic world, modern West and Turkey
5   Perceive emergence, development, faith, ritual and ethical system of historical and living religions and their relations with each other

2 History of Religions: Themes, Methods and its relations with other Sciences of Religion
3 Religion in terms of History of Religions: Definitions, theories on its origins and main dimensions
4 Traditional Anatolian religions and their features
5 Traditional Persian religions: Zoroastrianism, Mithraism and Mandeans
6 Traditional Turkish Religion: beliefs and practices
7 Traditional Chinese and Japan religions: Confucianism, Taoism and Shintoism
8 Mid-term
9 Indian Religions: Main features of Indian religions
10 Hinduism: Historical development and sacred texts
11 Hinduism: Doctrines (karma, reincarnation, yoga, meditation)
12 Religions emerged from Hinduism: Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism
13 Buddhism: Historical development and sacred texts
14 Buddhism: main doctrines
15 Final exam
