Course Objective

To introduce contemporary Muslim scholars and their thoughts based on their lives and books or articles so that students will understand the background and assumptions of their thoughts from the first-hand sources. In doing so, to enable them to approach those scholars in a critical way. To analyze those scholars' methodologies and approaches towards the Quran, the Sunnah, Sufism, the Fiqh and politics, especially women issue, religion-politics, religion-economy, religion-peace-war, religion and secularism, religion-science, religion-tradition, religion-ethics and so forth, so that they will be able to carry their thoughts to the current issues.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will examine the concepts of 'Contemporary/Modern' and 'Scholar', so that they will apprehend what 'Contemporary Muslim Scholars' means.
2   Will learn prominent scholars' lives, struggles and thoughts on God-universe-human, politics, ethics, art, relilgion-peace-war, women issues, environmental problems, terror, health such as Muhammed Ikbal, Seyyid Kutup, Mawdudi, Ali Seriati, Necip Fazıl Kısakurek and so on.
3   Will gain the ability to approach them in a critical way instead of accepting or denying them wholly..
4   Will analyze the Islamic sciences such as Tafseer, Hadith, Fıqh, Sufism and so on with the distinctive thoughts and opinions of comtemporary Muslim scholars.
5   Will be able to conduct their thoughts to the current daily-basis issues.
