Course Objective

To introduce some famous tomb buildings built in Turkiye in the periods of Seljuqs, Beyliks and Ottomans, by studying the appearing first tombs in Anatolia, and their historical references; and also to study religious-social functions of the buildings in Turkish-Islamic history.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students learn the origin of tomb architecture in Anatolia and its historical references.
2   They know the standard form and functions of the tombs of Anatolian Seljuks, Beyliks and Ottomans.
3   They have information about embalming tradition in Turkish tomb architecture
4   They learn the place of these tombs in Islamic tomb architecture, and explain the prominent relations
5   They understand the importance and the historical function of the tomb buildings in the religious-social life.

9 Ottoman tombs: form and function.
10 Bursa Yeşil Türbe (Green Tomb): Architectural design and decoration.
11 Bursa Muradiyah tombs
12 Qanuni tombs, Hurram tombs, Mimar Sinan Tomb
13 Late period Ottoman Tombs: Westernisation
14 General Review and religious-social functions of the tomb buildings
