Course Objective

Sufism is a religious though system and institution that has penetrated and taken effect social fabric (of Islamic societies) as well as faith and worship life of Islamic societies. Although its legal status has preferred different, in all Islamic societies has been seen its impact and Marks. Significant changes and developments have taken place concerning our religious and social life in our recent history. These are closely related to Sufism and it's institutions. The purpose of this course is to review significant changes occurring in relations between Sufism and community life, to put forth the problems of Sufic life in our recent past and today and to prepare the ground for developing solution proposals about these problems.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Student becomes aware of discussions related to the religious and Sufic life in Tanzimat (reforms) and Meşrutiyet (constitutional government) years.
2   He knows point of view of various religious groups and intellectual environments to the Sufic life in the Tanzimat and Meşrutiyet years.
3   He learn legal changes and adjustments made about religious and mystical life when the transition to the republic period.
4   He knows the positive and negative results caused in the historical process by these regulations.
5   He recognizes certain Sufi groups that are active today. He estimates about the future of the Sufic life in our country.

3 Relationships of Islamists with Ittihad ve Terakki(Union and Progress)
4 Relationships of members of Sufism with Ittihad ve Terakki and Islamists
5 The contribitions of Sufic Members to the Milli Mücadele (National Struggle)
6 The legal regulations in the period of the Republic (Cumhuriyet)
7 Point of view of Sufic members about regulations concerning dervish lodges.
8 Mid-Term exam
9 Positive and negative results of the closure of Dervish lodges.
10 Sufic communities that are active in the present day-I
11 Sufic communities that are active in the present day -II
12 Sufic themes in the literary and historical artifacts of the present day
13 Sufism and Urban Islam
14 The role of the Sufism in conversion events in the West
