Course Objective

To evaluate region, regional development and dynamics of urban and rural development
To evaluate social development theoretically and specially within the locality and to be informed about the applications of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS), Regional Development Agencies considered important within development models, the concept of cross-border cooperation and cross-border cooperation projects.
To evaluate the location of Turkey within the framework of regional development dynamics, defining the future sustainable and livable cities by developing applicable models at local and national levels and monitoring international developments with the information to be acquired within the above-mentioned scope are regarded as the primary purposes.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To define the basic principles, concepts and international approaches pertaining to regional-rural development and cross-border cooperation
2   To gain professionalism in making a comparative analysis of Turkey and similar practices in Europe and in the world with international examples.
3   To teach strategic planning approach and the related negotiation
4   To form a student profile that is susceptible to benefiting from the project funds provided by the EU, international institutions as well as local and regional institutions
5   To gain the culture of national and international cooperation

2 Regional Development and Social Development Approach in the World and Evaluation of Developments, Concept of interregional competition, participation, governance and regional development links
3 European Union and Region, Council of Europe and Region, Approach to Region in International and National Legislations
4 Regional Development Models, Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS), Regional Development Agencies
5 Approach to Strategic Plan Regional Plan and Strategic Planning
6 Practices of Regional Development Agencies in the World, administrative/political structures of the related country and the links of agencies to organization models
7 Approach to Region in the Turkish Administrative Structuring- Unitary Structure and Basic Principles as well as Practice and Experience of Turkey about Development Agencies
8 Mid-Term Exam
9 Regional analyses based on social and human capitals and indicators of urban competition
10 Rural Development, dynamics of rural development, mountainous regions and regional development strategies, rural development policies and strategies on national scale
