Course Objective

The objective of this course is to provide students a solid grounding in the theory and practice of product and business development covering market feasibility (what is the need and do customers want the product), technical feasibility (engineering design, prototyping, and manufacture), and financial feasibility (how much money will the company make). It also aims to provide students with an understanding of the ways in which technology is brought to market.

1   Ability to identify the necessary steps to produce a viable product and critical elements of the product development process
2   Ability to translate market needs into product idea statements and develop ideas into concept statements
3   Ability to conduct concept testing
4   Ability to engage in business case development for a new product concept
5   Ability to develop a launch plan for a new product

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Principal methods of teaching will be lectures and case discussions. The students are expected to attend lectures and discuss cases in small group settings. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they gained from the lectures to the group projects they will conduct.
