Course Objective

Introductory level rock mechanics is covered in this course. Rock mass rating, deformability and strength characteristics of rocks, bearing capacity and settlement of foundations on rock and anchor design in rock formations are introduced to the students.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Being able to define rock types.
2   Being able to plan field and laboratory tests necessary for rock formations.
3   Classify rocks according to their geological and index characteristics.
4   Define engineering problems that could be encountered in rock formations.
5   Calculate bearing capacity and settlement of foundations on rock formations.
6   Analyze stability of rock slopes.
7   Relate rock, foundation and structural response in homework assignments.
